Switch preferences: Internal communication

These preferences configure advanced settings related to the communication between Switch application components. Do not change these settings unless you understand why you need to change them.
Note: The ports in the range 0 to 1023 are often managed by the IANA and should only be used by privileged users.

Property

Description

Switch Server name

The name of this instance of the Switch Server. This name will be shown to users of SwitchClient. It is also used in the title bar of the application and in the file name of exported logs.

Port for Switch Designer

The port used for communication between Switch Server and Switch Designer, in the range of 1 to 65535.

Port for SwitchClient

The port used for communication between Switch Server and SwitchClient instances, in the range of 1 to 65535.

Port for Switch Watchdog - Switch Server

The port used for communication between Switch Server and Switch Watchdog, in the range of 1 to 65535.

Port for Watchdog

The port used for communication between Switch Designer and SwitchClient Watchdog, in the range of 1 to 65535.

The following options are only available if you have licensed SwitchClient.

Allow older clients to connect (less secure)

To protect Switch against the Heartbleed Bug (a leak in OpenSSL), as of Switch 12 update1, Switch Server uses new, secure SSL certificates for the HTTPS communication with Switch Clients, Enfocus Connectors and Switch Designer.

We recommend upgrading to SwitchClient 12 update 1 or Enfocus Connect 12 (as soon as it is available). You must recreate the Connectors in order to use the new certificates.

However, if you want to establish the communication with older client applications (released before Switch 12 update 1), you can still use the old certificates, by setting this preference to Yes. In that case, be aware that the connections are less secure.

Note: Keep in mind that all connections (to old and new clients) use the old certificates.

If set to No (default), the Switch Server uses the new, secure SSL certificates for HTTPS communication with Switch Clients, Enfocus Connectors and Switch Designer.

Compress SwitchClient jobs

If set to Yes (default), jobs transferred from and to SwitchClient instances are compressed (resulting in higher processing time and lower bandwidth consumption).

If set to No, jobs are not compressed (resulting in lower processing time and higher bandwidth consumption); this option is meaningful for high-speed local networks.

Maximum number of SwitchClients for iPad Maximum number of SwitchClients for iPad that are allowed to connect to Switch at the same time.
Enable Push notifications Set this to Yes to enable Push notifications for SwitchClients to your iPad. These notifications are used to send job and status information from the Switch Server to SwitchClient for iPad.
If Enable Push notifications is set to Yes, the following additional fields appear:
  • Send every (hours): Set the time interval in hours for Push notifications
  • Use proxy: Set this to Yes to enable SOCKS5 proxy to send Push notifications. The following additional fields appear:
    • Name or IP address of host: Enter name or IP address of the proxy server of your local network
    • Proxy user name: Enter the user name that you use to log in to the proxy server
    • Proxy password: Enter the password that you use to log in to the proxy server
    • Proxy port: Enter the port number used for communication with the proxy server
Note: If you want to set a firewall rule to allow all network communication (like SwitchClient, FTP ...), you need to set an exception for the Switch Service process instead of the Switch Designer process because network communication for Switch happens through this process. For more information on which ports should be used, check the above table.
