Collecting application data

To collect the Switch application data

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Locate the SwitchDataCollector in the Switch installation directory (make sure Switch is closed!).
    • In Switch, choose File > Collect application data .
For more information about the difference, refer to Data Collecting Wizard. The Switch Data Collecting Wizard Welcome screen appears.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Select the data you want to include in the resulting zip package. You have the following choices:
    • Logs: Server logs in a .db3 file (entire folder "<app_data_root>\logs")
    • Preferences: Switch preferences XML (entire folder "<app_data_root>\settings")
    • Datasets: Jobs datasets (entire folder "<app_data_root>\datasets")
    • Application settings: Switch settings extracted from the registry (on Windows) or plist files (on Mac). The extracted data is put into an ApplicationSettings.txt file. On Mac, actual plist files are also included in the zip. This checkbox cannot be cleared.
    • Layout description: Description of Switch installation files, saved into a file called ‘Report.txt'. It includes a listing of all files and folders with their attributes (size, modification date, permissions etc.) from the Switch installation folder. This checkbox cannot be cleared.
    • Internal log messages: Internal log files for all processes with a more detailed description of errors and operations. This checkbox cannot be cleared.
Note: If the file size becomes too big or if collecting files takes too much time, you may want to exclude certain data types.
  4. Choose a destination for the resulting zip package and click Next. You can as well change the name of the zip package as required. The default name has the following format: "Switch Data "<current date> <nn-nn-nn>.zip", e.g. Switch Data 2015-09-14 10-29-30.zip.
  5. Select the flows you want to collect and click Next. If you're using the stand-alone version of the tool, you must either select all flows or none; it's not possible to select a subset.

Îf you're using the Designer version, all flows are displayed in alphabetical order. They are selected by default, but you can clear the ones you don't need. Note that advanced features (like grouping, sorting, flags etc) are not supported.

A summary of the chosen options is shown. You can still make changes as required by clicking the Back button.
  6. Click Commit. The data collection starts.
    Note:
    • If the wizard is launched from the Switch Designer, it deactivates all active flows, before collecting the data. Afterwards, the flows are re-activated.
    • You can stop the data collection (for example if it takes too much time) by clicking Abort. However, aborting can be performed only between steps, for example: between collecting flows and exporting logs. The Wizard will wait until the previous step is finished and will only then abort the collection process.
  7. Once the zip package has been created, click Close. The zip package is placed in the location chosen in step 4. The structure is very simple: each data part is placed in a separate subfolder, e.g. Application Data, ExportedFlows, Report, and Settings. The content of the Application Data subfolder mirrors the contents of the actual Switch application data root.

If the wizard was launched from Switch, the Report folder will contain a file named "AboutDialog.txt, which contains information extracted from the About box in Designer.
