Switch preferences: Processing

These preferences allow you to configure the way jobs are processed in Switch.

A number of these preferences affect the performance of Switch. For more information, refer to Switch performance tuning.

Property

Description

Server language

Language used by the Switch Server for alert e-mails.You can select one of the following languages:
  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
Note:
Language environment

Indicates the overall language environment in which Switch is installed: Western or Japanese.

This setting affects the text encoding defaults for email and ZIP compression to match the legacy standards used in the selected language environment (that is, for interacting with software that does not use Unicode).

Concurrent network transfer tasks The number of FTP and e-mail file transfers (counting both send and receive) allowed to occur in parallel.

Concurrent transfers to the same site

The number of file transfers to the same FTP site allowed to occur in parallel (counting both send and receive).

If there is no limit other than the overall maximum number of concurrent file transfers (as determined by the previous preference), select Automatic ; otherwise select Inline value and enter a value between 1 and 100.

Concurrent processing tasks

The number of job processing tasks allowed to run in parallel.

Note: Recommended value = the number of CPUs of the server + 1.
"Processing tasks" are tasks performed by the following flow elements:
  • All flow elements in the Configurators section
  • The following elements in the Basics section:
    • Set hierarchy path
    • Ungroup job
    • Split multi-job
    • Assemble job
    • Execute command
  • The following elements in the Tools section:
    • Sort by preflight state
    • Compress
    • Uncompress
    • Split PDF
    • Merge PDF
    • Hold job
    • Inject job
    • Rename job
    • Sort job
    • Log job info
    • Sort files in job
  • The Script element in the Scripting section:

Heavy scripts affect the number of concurrent processing tasks. For more details about light and heavy scripts, see Execution slots.

  • The following elements in the Communication section:
    • Pack job
    • Unpack job
    • Monitor confirmation
  • The Database connect element in the Database section.

Default number of slots for concurrent elements

The number of slots available for scripts and tools working in concurrent mode:
  • 0 = Tasks will be executed in concurrent mode and all available slots will be used.
  • 1 (default) = Tasks will be executed one after the other (serialized execution mode).
  • 2 or more = Tasks will be performed in concurrent mode.
In Switch, the default value set in the Preferences can be overruled for a particular flow. Proceed as follows:
  1. Set the the flow property Allow advanced performance tuning to Yes.
  2. For all flow elements (in that particular flow) that support concurrent processing, change the element property Number of slots from Default to any other value.
Note: Be cautious when tuning performance properties; unwary use may slow down performance!

Scan user-managed folders every (seconds)

The frequency with which the user-managed folders (i.e. the folders with a path defined by the user) and Submit hierarchies (i.e. by default user-managed) are scanned for newly arrived jobs.

Process file only after (seconds)

The time for which newly arrived jobs must be stable before they are processed; to avoid picking up an input job before it has been completely written to disk, Switch ensures that the size of the file (or the total size of a job folder) has not changed for at least this amount of time before processing the job.

Reactivate flows upon startup

When starting up, if this property is set to Yes, Switch automatically reactivates flows that were active when Switch was closed; otherwise all flows are inactive after startup.

Stop processing if free disk space is less than (MB)

If the amount of free disk space for application data is lower than the entered amount, processing will stop, avoiding "Disk Full" processing errors.
